Eri - the collar

The costume includes a collar of each Maiko ("eri" 襟 called), which is every time over the sub-Kimono (nagajuban down) or sewn onto it and then only comes the actual kimono.

Each collar is made of silk with a red tone, which is fine by hand with white, silver and gold thread is embroidered. The younger the Maiko is, the less dense the embroidery of the respective Eri and the more you see the red of silk.

Over time, however, the embroidery more and more until something is barely visible from the Red; Red is the color of childhood. This goes on and so on until the day of the "Erika" (ゑりかえ) - changing the red to the white collar of a Geisha, White is the color of the adults dar.

For the summer, two collars made of silk tulle and for the winter three from crepe. Each can cost between € 1000-2000.

Maiko-collars:

The last five collars call themselves "ofuku" since the Maiko with this from the time when their Wareshinobu-hairstyle Ofuku hairstyle changes. This continues until Sakkou haircut, the last maiko hairstyle before the Erika. Other collars are called "Shinobu." On the fine embroidery can be seen that these collars are worn by young maiko, as more red is visible.
